Fighting, Demanding and Obtaining…

The "Rights" of legal marriage equality

Since the LGBTQ+ riots on June 28, 1969, also known as the Stonewall Uprising, there has been a fight and demand for recognition of the rights and identities they deserve, facing opposition from various societal views.

It took 31 years until the Netherlands’ legislature approved a law in 2000, making it the first country to recognize same-sex marriage in 2001 legally.

After that, many countries have proposed legislation regarding LGBTQ+ marriage for extensive review and have garnered global attention. Most of the countries recognizing the law are in Western Europe.

On June 18, 2024, the Senate meeting session voted to approve bill amendments to the Civil and Commercial Code (Volume…) for the year…, or Marriage Equality Bill’s third agenda.

After this, if the Constitutional Court decides that the Marriage Equality Bill is not contrary to the Constitution, the bill will be passed to the Cabinet and the Prime Minister for presentation to the King. This law will be enacted after the announcement in the Gazette 120 days or around the end of 2024.

Conclusion… What will “Marriage Equality” look like once it is approved?

Same-sex partners who are 18 years and older will be eligible to register their marriage to gain legal rights, such as inheritance, tax deductions, and adoption.

Thailand is set to become the third country in Asia to recognize same-sex marriage, following in the footsteps of Taiwan and Nepal. This will make Thailand one of 40 countries in the world that recognize “Marriage Equality.”

*Please note that Nepal’s parliament has not yet approved a Marriage Equality Law

Apart from the “Marriage Equality Law,” which represents the progress of gender equality, another area that needs attention in the future is gender equality in the portrayal of roles on TV and in movies, which has traditionally favored “Male” characters.
